Each daily unit is a lesson plan incorporating a variety of activities that focus on a theme being presented. They may be modified to meet the teacher's and student's needs. The time allotted for each will depend on the children's ages, attention spans, and the number of children in the group. We incorporate listening and verbalization, visual and auditory discrimination, as well as both fine and gross motor coordination in our planning. ************ PARTS OF THE DAILY UNIT *************** Indoor play: Supervised free play period in which there is access to free art, housekeeping and doll play, puzzles and table toys, large building toys and discovery tables, with emphasis on sharing and independence. This time is also important in developing language, social skills and motor coordination. Art: Art reinforces the themes presented as well as encourages the child's creativity. In addition to the daily structured project, the children are encouraged to explore their imagination with tracing, drawing, coloring, cutting, designing, etc. Music and fingerplays: Singing, dancing, marching, and playing musical instruments enables us to direct the children's energy and helps them to learn through repetition. In addition to some preschool favorites, we often incorporate classical music into our day. Class time: The lesson of the day is presented to expand our children's understanding of the theme through different methods. Active / Outdoor play: Supervised free play helps develop large muscle coordination, strength, balance, and social skills. Storytime and drama: This quiet time helps to stimulate imagination, listening and communication skills, as well as to develop a love for reading and appreciation for literature. Field trips: Trips help the children to increase the understanding of our unit themes and enjoy learning.
